Blood platelet behaviour in syphilis.

چکیده
Blood platelets carry a negative surface charge (Abramson, 1928) and so changes in platelet behaviour may result from changes in this charge. The fact that the migration of platelets in an electric field can be measured by microelectrophoresis was shown by Bangham, Flemans, Heard, and Seaman (1958), using an apparatus which consisted of a capillary tube with platinum electrodes fitted to each end. This capillary tube was filled with plasma rich in platelets. Using essentially the same technique, Hampton and Mitchell (1966a) showed that small concentrations of adenosine diphosphate (ADP) and noradrenaline increase the electrophoretic mobility of platelets and also that there is a characteristic change in this response pattern in certain pathological conditions. This paper reports typical abnormalities of blood platelet electrophoretic mobility pattern in cases of early syphilis, which are also observable, though to a lesser degree, in late syphilis. After penicillin these abnormal patterns reverted to normal.

Evaluation of the Seroprevalence of Transfusion Transmissible Infections among Blood Donors in a Tertiary Care Hospital of North India
Background: Unsafe transfusion practices put patients at high risk of transfusion transmissible infections. We aimed to evaluate the prevalence of transfusion transmissible infections (including Human Immunodeficiency Virus [HIV] 1 and 2, Hepatitis B Virus [HBV], Hepatitis C Virus (HCV) and syphilis) during a period of 18 months among blood donors in the Blood Bank of Lady Hardinge Medical Coll...

The causes of thrombocytopenia in the newborn and young infant differ from those of older children and adults. Maternal antibodies, platelet sequestration during haemolytic disease of the newborn, and thrombocytopenia following replacement transfusion with stored blood, bacterial septicaemia, and spirochaetal and protozoal infections are important causes of neonatal thrombocytopenic purpura. It...

Venereal diseases are still a common problem in today's world. Even though tremendous advances are being made in medicine and large budgets are being spent to control sexually transmitted diseases (STD), especially in western countries, these diseases are still yet very common, and today AIDS has been added to the threats posed by STD to human life. The status of syphilis was evaluated in ...
متن کاملAn Overview on Platelet-derived Microparticles in Platelet Concentrates: blood collection, method preparation and storage
Preparations of platelet concentrates (PCs) that are stored under blood bank conditions and used for transfusion purposes, appear to be enriched in platelet derived-microparticles (PMPs) with high coagulant activity that may change platelet efficacy and safety issues. High shear stress could cause shedding of PMPs from the platelet plasma membrane, platelet aggregation, and activation of the co...
